STS 340: Finding Order in Nature: Getting Started

Biographical Dictionaries

Entries in biographical dictionaries can be immensely helpful, providing you with:

  • overview of the subject's life
  • historiography
  • bibliography of both primary and secondary sources.

Building Context

Essays in subject encyclopedias will help you understand the social, political, cultural, economic, and intellectual contexts of your subject's life and work.

Online Subject Encyclopedia Collections

The following links will take you to large digital collections of subject encyclopedias.  The Gale Virtual Reference Library is an especially good place to start for STS courses.
